Tall, Yellow Thing

This morning, I woke up at about six and went back to sleep. I decided that I felt too crappy to get up and go to work. About a half hour later, I heard something that sounded strange, but I ignored it and continued sleeping.

When I got out of bed at 7:30, I saw a long, metal yellow column out the front window. We live on the fifth floor (sixth floor American) so it's not that often that we have something really big just sitting out the window.

I looked at it, trying to assess what it could be and what it could be there for. It was obviously what I heard. I thought that it might be an alien. It was one of those "this is too wierd to be happening" things. It was really huge and came out of nowhere.

As it turns out, it was a crain that picked up stuff from our side of the building (we live looking out onto a square) and moved it up and over to the other side of the building onto a terrace. It was huge. So it had to go all the way up the side of the building and then over that far again. Funny to think that that was the easiest way to get these things to that terrace. They were building materials, windows and lumber. How expensive it must have been to use that thing.

I watched it fold up. It was a slow process and not that exciting. They have such a strange way of getting things up and around here. We have one of those hooks for moving on our building. The place is totally set up for things like that - very Amsterdam.

Not much happened today. I got some stuff done around the house. Mostly I rested. I'm trying to stave off being sick. I think I have the energy to go back to work now.

Yeah, it's so mellow here that it sometimes makes me nervous.
