Booty Call

Last year when F and I were in Greece for vacation, I was surprised by the numbers (and the variations of) bare mid-drifts. I thought it was, perhaps, a Greek or even European phenomenon. It wasn't the style when I left New York. Then I saw an American magazine and I realized that it was not just happening here.

(When I was going to church camp as a kid, one of the rules on the dress code list for girls was "no bare mid-drifts." I hear that in my head a lot as I ride along and see all those navels. And I'm all into loving your body, but...it's certainly a new standard in what's acceptable.)

Now these Dutch girls (and, again, I've been pretty immersed in this culture and this dress code) are wearing boots with everything. It's a whole boots with skirts thing going on. It's not a funky cowboy boots with shorts or a wacky skirt. It's dress boots with dress skirt getting on the train in the morning. That fashion guy on Extreme Makeover (thank God for American imports) said recently to put boots away for the summer. I agree. But it's a big look here.

These Dutch girls have such a look. I was walking down the platform this morning trying to figure out what it was about. It's partly makeup, partly hair, attitude, etc. But it's not like it's one look. There are total princesses with too much makeup and plain janes with none. But they are all easy to pick out. It's difficult to put my finger on. All I know is that they are Dutch women.

I was talking about American television shows like Extreme Makeover. Sorry that wasn't clear.
